Cartwright, vice chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, said previously scheduled talks with Egyptian officers this week did not formally address the demonstrations, but he added: "It would be hard to have ignored the fact, you know, that this was going on and it wasn't ignored."
U.S. officials did not offer advice to the visiting Egyptians on the crisis and the Egyptian officers did not discuss their government's plans, he said.
"We didn't say anything to them about how they should handle it and they didn't tell us how they were going to handle it," the general said.
Sandy Vershbow, U.S. assistant secretary of defense, is leading the talks for the Pentagon. Egypt's delegation is led by the chief of staff of the Egyptian armed forces.
